I have had a love/hate/love2hate relationship with Blizzards idea of pvp. I never cared much for the constant balancing act they do between PVP/PVE aspects of the game. I have never understood why they had to merge them into one set. They have explained over and over again, to do such a thing would be too much work. I still find it hard to believe, the epitomy of great gaming developers, can't figure out how to make it happen with ease. I'm sure everyone at some point has been effected by the balancing act they do. It doesn't matter if your pvp or pve. Everyone has been effected, and mostly in negative ways.
We can argue specifics till we are blue in the face, but this is my opinion. I am of the opinion that paladins are the ones who consistently get the short end of the stick. More than any other class. I mean, there is a reason Paladins for more than 4 years, was called LOLRETS or LOLADINS. Hunters, with their HUNTARDS may be a close second. The only thing we paladins have had going or us, was the fact that we could gear ourselves up well enough to be the "Unkillable army that can't kill anything".
So anyway, when 3.0 came around, I was excited, they finally did something right and made pallies great at not only healing, but dps! We were still decent tanks, but wow we can dps now! Holy shit! We can out dps anything! It was great, but we knew we were going to be nurfed. Even after the nurf we are still pvp viable! We wasn't relegated to being a holy pally, we could ret, and dps with the rest of the best dps crowd. I still couldn't get into pvp however, because my first love is PVE, and raiding. I love hanging with my friends and downing bosses in Naxx.
So naturally I was excited when I found out 3.1 will offer dual specs. WoW! I can tank with one spec, and now do pvp/ret with the other! I was excited, ready to claim my spot in pwning pvp noobs while being able to not only tank, but dps in raids! Over this past weekend I did some studying on what ret build would work great for pvp as far as ret goes. I knew there were nerfs on the way, but I thought I could still pvp/ret and be viable. Right? Wrong, I should have been doing my homework better. While I was so enamored with Protections buffs for PVE, I neglected to keep up with the ret changes. Blizzard has gutted the viability of Ret in pvp. So much so they are now back to being LOLRETS. Anymore PVP is about who does the best burst damage, and Ret pallies don't have it anymore. Still great in PVE mind you but PVP? Hell no, anyone in there right mind wouldn't bring one of them to pvp party. This in turn screws me out of PVP yet again with my pally. So I'm back to fantasies, and will wait for the day when I get to take my ret pally into pvp.

Well, on the hunter case, HUNTARD was due more to the overwhelming amount of morons who play hunters than Blizzard's dislike of the class. Even so, DAMN.
Gotta say though man, I feel your pain. That was the downside of the combat rogue. They were the godmode pve build but the pvp viability was god aweful. Luckily for me, I have never been a fan of pvp.
Blizzard's "class balancing" for pvp, as evidenced by your example with pallies, is a relative joke with few class/specs godmoding while the rest do their best not to be relegated to the various LOL/TARD descriptions prevelent in the game.
I've said it for years and I will continue to do so. The rediculous presumption by Blizzard that their classes have to be balanced for pvp/pve with the same talent/ability listings is utterly rediculous. They have killed various aspects of both sides of the game by making adjustments that balance one end and gimp the other. In the end, we're left with LOLadins and the like.
Dude you waited too long. This was THE season for Ret pwnage in the arenas. Damage was high, health was low, and resilience was a non-factor for most of the season. Later on in the season though things shifted more towards the healers as resilience levels started to rise and health pools scaled while people weren't getting any better weapons. Still Ret/Holy Paladins and DKs were by far the dominant classes this season.
Next Season: Ret/Holy are at the bottom of the rankings after Blizzard smacked them out of the park with the nerf bat. I imagine we'll see the return of unkillable Resto Druids though their mana pools won't last as long. And DK's will still be at the top where rogues will probably rejoin them.
In response to Kira:
I saw an interesting article somewhere the other day pointing out that the general competency level of people playing the pure dps classes (hunter, rogue, mage, warlock) seems to have risen to about the level of most of the other classes. The theory behind this sudden shift was that most of the 'tards had moved to the latest no-skill class, the DeathTard.
Now this isn't to say that a Death Knight doesn't take skill to play well. It simply says that even without skill a Death Knight can be competitive in whatever. I don't think this is true for tanking, but for DPS from what I've seen it sure is cause I can put out nice numbers on mine, but I don't have a clue what I'm doing.
Your right Nykk, I waited too long and the time to shine passed me by. Unfortunately this time around, I couldn't afford the respecs to be able to do it on a consistent basis. I couldn't justify it with all the changes in gear, repairs as a tank, and general needs like epic flying and the like.
I would like to point out that Nykk has essentially just called himself an unskilled tard. Ok it's only in relation to the death knight but damn, I'm taking that one :-P
